Audience type

Mainly businesses but across all sectors. Would provided a basic reporting tool. Design of interface needs to reflect different abilities of users and also different companies. Would therefore be best to keep design minimal and clean.

They may want different outputs. Perhaps integrate using api’s to third parties like Statigram. i.e. business cards to Moo, and ability to tweet, facebook etc as many companies now integrate social media.

Subscriptions

Would be on a monthyl or yearly basis? What it there to keep clients? maybe they might sign up for a mnth and cancel subscription after they’ve fnished the reoprt?

Maybe need to include a promotional piece that can be sent so they are getting something back. Ideas for this include a monthly summary of their activities using the system. Could be printed of digital e-newsletter?

Ideas - Route 2

Interactive System for Museum

Working for a museum it would be good to be able to create something interactive for their gallery spaces. The museum focusses on the right to vote. They already have a flat visual showing main political groups that tried and succeeded in changing the voting system. Perhaps this could be transcribed into an interactive onscreen timeline?

Ideas - Route 1

Creation of reporting tool

Tool would allow business and individuals to create their own ifographics by inputting their data. This would generate data visualisations, with choice of style. The roject would involve producing and designing an online ‘tool’. Although they exist, they are either not visually considered or do not have the capability to download and export the graphs for us in print. I would want the program to bridge the gap between online data and printed reports which would conclude tie in the two modules previously. The project could include the following:

- Visual Design of online ‘tool’ which data would be entered into
     - Design of UI icons
     - Possibility to design of custom typeface based around ease of reading, complementing the reading of data visuals.

- Selection of different visual graph styles (using categories outlined in previous project)
     - datamap, datasphere, datablock etc. (Dataflow 2)

- Design of downloadable PDF/EPS system

Some Ideas & thoughts

- cards with project info. Colour coded for media type. Stacked to create physical graphics.

- Like the idea of using weight to portray infographics - ideas surrounding this?

- Data cards constructed, invert to create data sculpture

- Find images from Future Everything data exhibit for inspiration for 3D, inventive data displays.

Examining Formats of Reports: Some thoughts

The area I’m currently examining is the format and materials used in reports.

The traditional bound booklet or onscreen PDF for reporrts is an impractical way of viewing data. Graphs and visualisations are on different pages and this makes it difficult to compare different sets of figures. A few initial ideas are below:

Using Acetate or semi transparent paper:

— layering of acetate pages could create easy comparisons and contrasts of layered data

— this could be taken further by using the pages as lose slides over a set board. This may be slightly impractical but would make the report more interesting. this gives flexibility to compare different data sets. The data however would probably need to be in the same type of visualisation in order to be overlayed

— Using a thinner paper would give a similar effect. Much like the Barbican map (to post later!) with reverse prinitng on the back.

— Examining the layering of the graph over the relevant texts. Would readers take in this information more or less? It may produce a better connection between the visualisation and the text.

— a simple poster to accompany the report showing the visuals altogether.
